The Opera for Seniors program takes lively operatic repertoire to elderly persons in convalescent and retirement homes. Presented in the Philadelphia and Montgomery County regions, the outreach programs of music education and enrichment are specifically designed to address the unique aspects of performing and interacting with students of all ages as well as residents and attendees of retirement life communities and nursing homes. These programs actively engage audiences while further contributing to their cultural/educational development and quality of life experience. The levels of care for the Opera for Seniors presentations include independent living, assisted living and nursing care.
Opera for Seniors program targets those residential care facilities which lack ancillary services, e.g., on-site music therapy programs or limited budgets to allow for residents to attend outside events. These underserved populations are also target populations for public performances. Opera North's public performances are usually attended by a seventy-eight percent African American audience representing wide ranges of income levels. The opera company determined productions of non-traditional opera presentations intensified audience development for the communities in which it serves.
